About the Artist

About the Artist

Creating has always been an important part of my life.  I developed a love of color and texture from my first creative outlet, which was sewing. I enjoy learning and experimenting with different mediums and techniques.  Inspiration for my artwork is drawn from personal experiences, observations, cultural heritage and current events.

My work has been shown in many open and juried group exhibits, as well as solo exhibits and are included in private and corporate collections. I have received artist grants and awards for my watercolor and acrylic paintings and photography.

My first college degree was a BS in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from Southern University.  After a long career in Computer Programming, I returned to college and earned a BA in Studio Arts from the College of Charleston.  Baton Rouge Louisiana is my hometown.  But, I have lived in Columbus Ohio, Dallas Texas, and Charleston South Carolina.  I now live in Arlington Texas with my husband.  We have one son.

Artist Statement

I started painting with oils as a student.  In an effort to avoid some of the chemicals associated with oil painting, I have gradually made a transition to water media (acrylics, watercolors) and  encaustics (melted beeswax).  Recently, I have been able to paint with oils again by using water soluble oil paint, which do not require the use of solvents.

My artwork is primarily representational and figurative.   But, in recent years I have been exploring abstraction.  I find that painting with encaustics encourages me to be spontaneous and less structured.  Since the melted wax cools very quickly, I have to work faster.  The resulting images have a loose and somewhat impressionistic style.

I like to  incorporate paper and fabric as collage elements into my paintings.  The use of fabric is reminiscent of a time when sewing was my main artistic outlet.  It also allows me to make a more personal statement.   By combining other media with the paint, I can convey feelings and mood through the layering of colors, textures and patterns.
